It's still sort of hard to believe.
There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.
She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.
So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.
So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

"I came across him while he was looking at engagement rings. It's pretty much impossible to pretend you're doing anything other than shopping for engagement rings when someone sees you doing it. But show it to me proper like I haven't already seen it."

"So, yeah... I guess I'm getting married." She says it sort of like a question, although it's not, she's obviously getting married and it's kind of a huge deal. Extending her hand across the table to Jesse, she can't help but admire the ring again. It's perfect. It's not the standard fare, it's not some plain, boring diamond, which she totally loves, because she knows it means Newt got something specifically for her.

Jesse couldn't deny that there was a bit of an ache in his heart at this, that it made him think of Rebekah and the conversations they had had about spending their lives together, unnaturally immortal. In hindsight it seemed kind of crazy, or at least very surreal. Jesse had been thinking of becoming a vampire. Craziness. But for Rebekah?
Anyway, this was Kate's moment and he wanted to be excited with her. And she was excited, he could tell, because this was an awesome moment and she and Newt were both crazy in love with each other and just belonged together. He hoped that neither of them would ever leave the city.
"You're going to be Mrs. Dr. Newt someday," he said with a grin as he admired the ring. "You could do a mash up of names? the Geizsons. Gregszlers?"

"I'm sort of attached to it, I think," she says. "My family, as totally insane as they are, have always been there for me. I feel like... I don't know. I need to keep it."

"I get it," Jesse said with a nod. Especially in a place like Darrow where you didn't know if and when you'll ever see your family again he could understand wanting to keep that connection. Besides, it was hard to think of her as anything other than Kate Gregson. It fit her too perfectly for her to give that up.
"So do you guys have a date or anything yet or are just enjoying the engaged phase without having a date and wedding preparations hanging over your head?"

"But when I do, I'm sure I'll be overwhelmingly stressed out and terrified," she adds brightly. "So that's something to look forward to, right?"

Jesse thought that not planning it right away was kind of a good idea. That gave you time to be excited about the fact that you were going to get married without the threat of a deadline over your head. There was plenty of time to be miserable about that later. Hopefully Kate would be able to have whatever kind of wedding she wanted without stressing too much.
"Exactly. So much preparation for just a few hours that one ridiculous, rude or drunk guest could completely ruin. What's not to love about that prospect?"

"Run off to... oh, wait, we can't leave," she says with a sarcastic roll of her eyes. "I guess that sort of kills that plan, huh?"

"Here's the plan, I'll get ordained as a minister and then I'll marry you two whenever you want," Jesse said with a grin. It did kind of suck that they couldn't get away to go anywhere for a honeymoon or something but Newt and Kate were both pretty clever and creative, he was willing to bet that they'd figure something out. Also, he would totally be willing to actually marry them if that's what they wanted. Or just do anything they needed because they were two of the most awesome people that he knew.
"I'll even get an Elvis costume."

"This is going to be a classy affair," she continues with a grin. "With flowers and people wearing tuxedos and all that fancy shit."
no subject
"Classy affair with all that fancy shit," Jesse said with a grin. While he didn't exactly think "fancy shit" when he thought of Kate and Newt he was pretty sure that they could pull it off. Kate was gorgeous and Newt was a stylish dude so they would probably look amazing with all that fancy shit. Plus, they deserved it, they deserved every bit of happiness they could get as quickly as they could get it. He really, he really hoped that something didn't happen to either of them before they got married. Or before ever, really.
"It'll be awesome and I'm really happy for both of you, Kate."

"Newt doesn't really have the figure for a big, white puffy wedding dress anyway," Jesse said with a shake of his head. He didn't know how Mindy was but he could imagine plenty of people that would be horrified at the idea of not having a traditional wedding with the dress and everything. If Kate didn't want that though, then he was sure she'd get something equally awesome to wear that she was happy with.

"But no, that's not for me. I was thinking maybe a coloured dress," she says. "There's this one at my work that's long and black and it has all these colours in the skirt, it's so pretty."
no subject
"But not a puffy dress, it would have to be one of the more sleek ones," he said, realizing that Kate was kind of into the idea of Newt in a strapless dress. Or at least Newt with exposed tattoos was the real draw there, which made sense. The tattoos that Jesse could see were pretty sweet.
"Colored dress would be pretty awesome," Jesse agreed, although in all honesty he actually didn't care one way or another really. Whatever Kate wanted would be awesome, considering that it was her wedding and all.
