It's still sort of hard to believe.

There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.

She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.

So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.

So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

It's all kind of exhausting. That's the conclusion Kate's come to since Newt woke up the other day and while she doesn't think she's ever been so grateful for anything, she's had to do a lot more running around since then and she's kind of beat. She's still working and she's moving her stuff into his place and she's spending all her free time at the hospital, but it's different than it was before. Doctors keep asking her questions she doesn't have answers to and she's pretty sure they're all driving Newt totally nuts, but she can't really help him, as much as she wants to.

It's led to her feeling pretty goddamn tired and she doesn't want to say anything about it, because it's not like she was the one who got stabbed and smashed hard enough in the head to actually rattle her brains. Usually she's pretty okay with being selfish, but right now she feels like she doesn't have a right to complain.

Still, when Korra had suggested the two of them do something, Kate had practically jumped at the opportunity. She'd invited her over, because the idea of having to go out and deal with crowds of people right now is super unappealing and she'd bought like, three cartons of ice cream -- for the variety, not because she plans on eating them all -- and some drinks and snacks for the two of them. It's kind of weird in a good way to be having someone over to Newt's apartment while he's still in the hospital, but it's not just Newt's apartment anymore, it's hers, too.

One more thing for her to get used to.
