Jun. 10th, 2017 01:32 pmMost of the time when Newt works late, Kate doesn't mind at all. She knows he's got loads on his plate and since he's pretty much the most brilliant scientist Darrow has ever seen -- totally no bias -- she expects that his job requires a lot of time. Most evenings she'll just chill out on her own or walk Jeff to the store and get some extra work done there, but when Newt tells her he's going to be late tonight, she decides she's bored and doesn't want to do work or watch TV by herself.
So she texts Chuck. Like, four times. She texts him until he answers, then demands he go out and do something with her. And she texts him about four more times about it until he agrees, which she feels is a serious victory on her part. Chuck is super grumpy about eighty percent of the time and it's part of why she loves him, but it also makes it difficult to get him to do fun stuff with her.
Not that she has any idea what she actually wants to do, which is usually dangerous. Whenever she and Newt want to do something fun, but don't have ideas about what to do, they tend to get into trouble. They've gotten arrested or nearly arrested way too many times already and she doesn't want to add to that tonight, but chances are they're not going to do something that's boring and strictly legal.
She tells him to meet her at the boardwalk, then changes, kisses Jeff on the nose, and heads out with her purse over her shoulder and her phone tucked into her pocket. She doesn't know why she changed, only that she figured a dress and heels wasn't the best plan for whatever they might be doing. Now she's in jeans and a cute pair of sneakers, which basically means she's ready for whatever.

Mar. 26th, 2017 08:54 pmIf Newt hadn't sworn up and down that the guy who'd broken his arm was a complete 'roid rage freak or what the hell ever, Kate would have killed him. Without a doubt, she would have absolutely destroyed him for having hurt her husband, because she's been through this shit before and it's not fun. Panicking and worrying and having to face up to the possibility of losing Newt is pretty much Kate's least favourite activity and it's something she generally does her best to avoid when at all possible.
But having some complete psycho break into the lab looking for some crazy ass drug and break Newt's arm pretty much forces her to think about it. It could have been a lot worse, she's totally aware of that and it terrifies her to think how it might have been. If the guy had been carrying a knife, he could have killed Newt right there in the lab without even thinking and shit like that terrifies her. It's not like she's never lost anyone before, she figures by this point she'd gotten to be pretty much an expert, but it's different when it comes to Newt.
She's never going to be prepared for the possibility of losing him.
Which is why he's pretty much been installed at the Dressing Room these days. She's the boss, she can do whatever the hell she wants and what she wants is to make sure her husband is okay, which means having him nearby at all times.
It's not like she thinks he minds all that much. He gets to park himself on one of the comfortable couches in the store and there's constantly food and tea and coffee and basically whatever the hell else he wants, because there's a zillion stores around the area and if she's not available to get something for him, she's pretty sure Peter would be happy to help out. So Newt's actually getting the star treatment right now and it eases Kate's anxiety a little.
But only a little. Because every single time she thinks about how it could have been worse, her throat gets all tight and she has to force herself to focus on whatever task she's doing at the moment. Which, at this moment, is bringing a glass of water over to Newt when she has some time between customers.

[february 12]
Feb. 3rd, 2017 01:02 pmIt's been a week and most of the time Kate still feels like it's totally insane for her to be not only the boss, but the owner of the boutique where she'd started working three years ago.
She's prepared, that's not an issue at all, she's poured all her energy into this for the past year, finishing a business degree, creating a legitimate business plan, securing financing and mapping out long term goals. She's worked with her former bosses daily to make sure she gets this right and she's pretty confident that she isn't going to run this place into the ground within the year, but all the same, sometimes she feels a little bit like an imposter.
Having to take over, though, means she needs to balance her priorities and that means not taking on too much at the regular store level. She's unwilling to completely give up on being a stylist, especially since she has a few clients who really like working with her, but she knows she can't handle everything she used to. Isabelle and Peter are amazing, even though Isabelle has some shit going on right now -- and Kate gets how that is, so she's letting Isabelle deal with that -- and she knows she needs at least one more person.
Jack had mentioned his friend Michelle and apparently he'd talked to Michelle, too, which is hilarious to Kate. Apparently six-year-olds network these days.
Still, she's happy enough to conduct the interview and she's already pretty sure she'll hire Michelle, so long as her sense of style isn't totally atrocious. It's good practice and she's admittedly excited to meet someone else who's into fashion. No one else is in today, the store closed on Sundays to give Kate time to do stuff like this and she's sitting on one the couches with her phone in full view of the front door just waiting for Michelle to arrive.

Dec. 29th, 2016 11:33 amThey're absolutely just here for the free food and drinks.
It's totally stupid, the idea of a timeshare, and Kate had laughed about it when one of the customers in the store had brought it up to her earlier, but then they had mentioned free food and drinks, and she'd suddenly been a lot more interested in what was on offer. Not that she's going to buy a freaking timeshare, of course, but passing up free food and drinks is just crazy.
Plus they're supposed to get some sort of reward just for showing up and listening to the stupid speech. The customer had told her last time it was a three month long membership to some bowling alley, which might not seem all that great to most people, but Kate loves bowling and she thinks if she gets that just for being here, then she'll be happy. That and cheap wine are basically all she needs in life.
Well, those and Newt. And nice clothes. And good food.
Okay, so she actually wants a lot out of life, but this is definitely good enough for now.
And they're not going to get suckered into anything, she's sure of that. Given that she and Newt have managed to face down the cops together multiple times, she's totally sure they can stand strong in the face of tempting offers of vacation space. Especially in Darrow, where it's not like anyone can really get away. Going up a damn mountain or out into the countryside barely counts as a vacation as far as Kate is concerned.
They're going to be just fine.

Nov. 2nd, 2016 08:20 pmThe only reason Kate doesn't tell Derek or Barry about the party is because she's totally convinced Derek would just say no. So the idea changes from forcing them into having a joint birthday party to throwing them a surprise joint birthday party, which means Derek can't be a party pooper and refuse to let it happen. If he doesn't know about, he can't boycott it.
It's the perfect plan.
The best thing about birthday parties, too, is they require seriously minimal decorating. She doesn't bother with balloons, because she's pretty sure both her animals would freak out if any of them popped, and instead just gets a giant banner made that says HAPPY BIRTHDAY, NERDS! She figures she's harped on the whole second Darrow nerd version thing enough that they'll get the joke.
Besides that, she just lets her awesome condo speak for itself. She buys tons of food and drinks, makes sure she sets Newt to the task of creating an awesome playlist for the party, and then she sleuths. It doesn't take her all that long to get a guest list and she hopes she hasn't missed anyone, but if she has, at least they can blame her instead of Derek or Barry. She texts them all to invite them, telling them it's a surprise, they have to be at her place by seven forty-five and not a second later.
Then she casually throws the idea of a double date movie night in Derek's direction, which he accepts, just as she knew he would. She also lies and says she works that night, so not to come over until eight, which should give everyone enough time to get into their hiding places. When he buzzes up to the apartment, she shushes everyone, lets Derek and Barry up, then turns off the lights and unlocks the door.
"Just come on in," she calls when they knock. "And turn on the light, will you? I forgot."
It sounds like a stupid excuse, but it doesn't even matter, not when they enter the apartment, turn on the light, and everyone totally scares the shit out of them when they shout, Surprise!

Sep. 19th, 2016 03:53 pmSomehow it surprises her not at all when Newt doesn't come home.
He's been in and out of the breach like a madman and she's just sort of accepted it because that's Newt. That's the man she married and she knew it when she married him and she'd accepted that if weird shit like this ever happened in Darrow, he'd be going crazy for it. Given how fascinated he'd been by the kaiju and the whole breach thing in his world, the second she'd heard about the breach, she had known she would never be able to stop him from going through, so she just hadn't tried. She had, however, lectured him enthusiastically on not getting himself killed and not fucking up the space-time continuum somehow. She doesn't even know what that means, but it sounds both impressive and like something Newt could do without much difficulty, so it had felt necessary.
She had also made him promise to come home every single night, no matter what.
So when he doesn't, she's not surprised, but she is worried, because he had sworn up and down he wouldn't scare her like that. Something has happened to him, that's the only explanation and Kate spends about an hour freaking out, trying to figure out what to do, and then she puts on jeans and a heavy sweater and a pair of ass kicking boots and heads for the breach.
At another time she would have called Derek, but he's justifiably freaking out and she doesn't want to add anything to his plate. So instead of calling him, she goes alone. It's scary, heading through the breach by herself, but if being with Newt has taught her anything, it's that she's totally capable of being awesome and that he's counting on her, which means she needs to come through for him. So she goes in, her eyes squeezed shut, her hands clenched into fists so tight she cuts into her palms with her nails, but then she's on the other side and she stands out like a sore goddamn thumb the second she gets here.
Everyone is dressed like nerd-Barry.
Ignoring the weird looks she gets, Kate sets off, first to any lab she can find, then to the hospital and finally to the police station. When she asks for Newt, at first no one can give her any answers, but after a few increasingly frantic moments, one of the female officers leans in and tells Kate she's heard of a few outsiders being detained at another precinct. She sets off at a run, making it there in record time, and when she demands to see her husband, she's actually sort of shocked that it works and she gets a response.
It feels like mere minutes before she's seated in a small visiting room on a hard plastic chair, waiting for Newt to join her.

Aug. 25th, 2016 01:02 pmIt starts off as a regular day, pretty much nothing out of the ordinary, and Kate does her thing like she does every other day. She sends Newt off to work, because he starts earlier than she does today, then takes her time getting ready, dressing for work, which means she looks awesome in a tight pink skirt and a black blouse with these adorable little lace panels at the shoulders and a pair of patterned heels. She cares about her clothing most of the time, but when it comes to work, it's extra important, wanting to look her best for the people who expect her to know everything about everything when it comes to fashion.
And since her shift doesn't start until a little later, she kisses Jeff on the nose, then picks up some coffee, dropping a cup off for Newt -- who she does significantly more to than just kiss on the nose -- before heading in the general direction of the Dressing Room. She has a little time to kill still, but she figures if nothing else she'll show up a bit early and shoot the shit with Peter or Isabelle, depending on who's working.
Halfway through her shift, though, people start talking. Her phone lights up with a bunch of text messages asking if she's heard anything about this breach or seen any of the people coming through. By the time she leaves work that evening, she still isn't sure what's happening, but at least everyone seems to be relatively safe.
She's paying so much attention to her phone, however, that as she leaves the Dressing Room, she nearly walks right into someone and she's ready to be an asshole about, even though it's totally her fault, when she looks up and finds she's walked straight into Marius.
"Shit, sorry," she says with a laugh. "Have you been keeping up with all this crazy stuff that's happening?"

Aug. 4th, 2016 04:09 pmDoing this under the cover of dark makes Kate feel sort of like they're committing some kind of badass bike riding crime. Which she's pretty sure isn't actually a thing, because who's going to commit a crime while riding a bike? They don't go that fast, even when people are really good at it, so she figures crimes aren't probably committed all that often while riding bikes, which more or less makes her whole idea of the thing totally pointless.
But she still feels kind of shady as she heads to the park after dark to meet up with Thomas. Newt knows what they're doing, but she's sworn him to secrecy, so if Thomas decides he doesn't like it or if he ends up faceplanting into a bunch of bushes, no one will ever know but the two of them. She won't even tell Newt about it if it happens, she'll keep it a complete secret, the kind she takes to the grave. She personally doesn't think it's a big deal and figures he's going to fall at least once or twice, but if Thomas wants to do it after dark, she decides not telling anyone when he wipes out is the least she can do.
God, she hopes he found himself a helmet. She's going to be pissed if he breaks his head open on a rock or something.
She's lounging on a bench as she waits for him, texting Newt random emojis and a super cute selfie she took at work earlier in the day. She debates taking a way hotter picture now, but the lighting isn't great and she's pretty sure she sees Thomas approaching down the path, walking a bike toward her and she's about eighty percent certain he wouldn't want to see that.
"Did you get a helmet?" she calls, loud enough to send a small flock of birds nesting nearby straight into the air at the sound of her voice.

Jun. 9th, 2016 11:15 amIt's super important for Kate to have people over to her new place, mostly so they don't decide she's become some rich bitch snob who never wants to see her friends anymore because they're not rich. Truthfully, she isn't rich either. Not even close. The lottery winnings had been enough to pay off her student debt, which has been a huge help, and put a sizable down payment on the condo, but they still have a mortgage they have to pay every month. Granted, it's way lower than it might have been otherwise, lower than their rest at Dimera was, and not having to make payments on her student loans has been a big help, but she's definitely not rich.
She's still going to have to take out a business loan when it comes time for her to take over the Dressing Room, but at least her credit looks awesome now, and she thinks there's probably little chance of being declined. Her bosses aren't retiring for another year or so, but they're using that time to teach her everything they can and she's a little startled to realize she might actually own a shop in a little over a year.
Which is why she needs to goof off now as much as she possibly can.
She's waiting for Carla Jean to join her now and they don't really have any specific plans, but Kate is looking forward to that. They'll figure something out, they always do, and mostly she just wants to spend some time with her friend.

Jun. 2nd, 2016 07:10 pmOver the years, Kate has come to the conclusion that she's mostly straight with a side of holy shit, that woman is fucking gorgeous, which she figures is more or less normal. She's never been super worried about defining shit like that anyway, not after watching her brother go through the whole thing with crazy-face Courtney, trying to figure out who and what he liked. She's in love with Newt, she's married to Newt, anyone else she finds attractive is just bonus material for her to ogle when they're not looking.
And it's really freaking hard not to ogle the girl who's just walked into the store. She's probably just about the most incredibly gorgeous person Kate has ever seen and she's pretty sure she knows it, too. How someone could look like that and not be aware of their near perfection is just beyond belief, so she has to assume the girl knows she's stunning and is coming in to find something equally stunning to wear. Which Kate is super into helping her find, partly because she's actually the only person working at the moment and partly because she just wants to.
"Hey," she says brightly, tucking some of her hair behind her ear. Beautiful or not, at least being around hot people doesn't fluster Kate, because she knows she also happens to be pretty damn amazing herself, and her ego is certainly healthy enough to carry her through interactions with even the most attractive people Darrow has to offer. "Can I help you find something?"

Kate hasn't seen Peter a lot socially lately and she's totally aware of the reason why. It makes sense and she's pretty sure in his position she would have already officially taken up the mantle of Darrow Hermit, so she's impressed he's coming to work at all.
She's been away from home for a long time, she's gotten used to losing people, she thinks she does a pretty decent job of bouncing back from even the most painful losses -- Reggie and Effy and Danny will always stand out -- but she can't pretend she knows what Peter's going through. Newt is the only person she's ever loved the way Peter loves Jason and if she were to lose him, she's pretty sure Hermit-ville would be the only way to go. Being taken away from Harry had definitely sucked, but she knows that relationship never would have lasted. It's different with Newt. Different in ways she can't even begin to explain and different enough that there's no simple solution to get over his loss.
So she doesn't get what Peter is going through. She'll never understand it unless she ends up in the same position herself eventually and Kate isn't much of a pessimist, so she doesn't let herself think about that possibility very often, but it's kind of hard not to think about it when watching a friend having to suffer through it.
But she doesn't know what to do. She doesn't know how to help. They work together and she tries to make Peter laugh, but it's all sort of bullshit. There's no way to fix this.
"Hey, do you wanna come hang out tonight?" she asks suddenly, a spur of the moment question more than anything. "Not at a bar or anything, just... at my place? Newt's at work, so it'd just be the two of us and Jeff and Cat." Maybe she can take his mind off things, even just for a little while.

It's not like Kate never expected to see any of the strangers from their house warming party a few months back, but she hasn't really run into any of them, not until now, and for a second the sight of Lila on the street surprises her. She has no other experience with the other woman, so suddenly seeing her somewhere other than her own apartment is kind of weird. She looks out of place, which Kate realizes is totally insane, it's just she's only ever seen Lila somewhere familiar.
That doesn't stop Kate from lifting her hand in a wave or shouting, "Hey!" Maybe she hadn't specifically invited Lila to her party, but once they'd gotten talking Kate had found that she had really liked her and that's pretty much the only thing that matters. She's always been relatively good at making friends, has always found talking to other people easy, at least on a superficial level. Maybe she has some trouble getting deeper and being really honest with people, but it's not like she has to tell everyone she meets all her secrets anyway.
"Hey," she says again when she's a little closer. "How's it going?"
She knows literally nothing about Lila, except that she's kind of ridiculously pretty and Kate feels the urge to dress her. She just knows clothes would hang perfectly on her frame and she would happily help Lila for free just for the chance to actually be the one choosing her clothes. Maybe for some big party or something in the future she'll ask.

It's almost her birthday.
So it's more like two weeks away than almost her birthday, but Kate is the sort of person who celebrates her birthday for the entire month and she's been announcing it to Newt for ages already. Not that she thinks he's going to forget, he's pretty great about stuff like that, but that's just Kate. She likes to celebrate herself for ages and she likes to remind people that they're supposed to celebrate her, too, which is probably obnoxious as hell, but Newt married her, so he has to put up with it.
Besides, it's not like there aren't a ton of benefits to being married to her. Sweet discount at the Dressing Room is number one, obviously, but Kate likes to think the fact that she's wandering around their awesome condo in a t-shirt and cute underwear comes as a close second and she doesn't know if Newt is actually paying attention to anything she's saying -- she's got a great ass, after all, and killer legs, so it's not like she could blame him -- but she figures maybe now isn't the best time to plan her birthday party. Not when she's half naked. He won't remember any of it.
"Twenty-three," she announces, finding she actually can't stop talking even though she's just made the decision not to keep planning. "That's not even a big one, it's not like there's anything special about turning twenty-three. I guess there wasn't really anything special about turning twenty-one here either, since eighteen is the legal age for pretty much everything."
She's in the kitchen, looking for this stupid mug she likes, one she'd made sure to bring from the apartment. It looks like an owl, with big grey eyes, and she knows it's kind of tacky, but it's her favourite and she can't find it.
Whirling toward Newt suddenly, she says, "Theme party. I should totally have a theme party."

There is exactly one baby Kate actually likes and she's on her way to see him right now.
Not living in the same building as Mindy does mean she sees them both a little less, but they both make the effort to reach out and she's had Mindy over a ton already. Today, though, she'd texted her friend on the way home from work just to make sure she would be there, and now she's hurrying toward Dimera, hitching her bag up over her shoulder so she can see the two of them. Babies are pretty much never on Kate's agenda and she is totally fine with that, but she likes Leo. She kind of adores him.
It's hard not to love a baby as cute as he is. Half the time it seems like he doesn't even cry, which especially endears him to Kate, because she's not sure she would know where to begin with a crying baby.
Even though she doesn't live there anymore, Kate just heads up on the elevator, having been let in by someone who recognizes her from the building. When she gets to their old floor, she looks wistfully at her apartment, then turns her back on it and knocks on Mindy's door before she turns the knob and steps inside. She's expected, after all, and she used to just walk in whenever she wanted back when she still lived here. She figures that much hasn't really changed.
"Yo," she calls. "Where's the cutest baby in the world?"

Living in her swanky condo is amazing and having paid off most of her students loans is even better, because it takes a huge chunk of payments off Kate's plate every month, which means she has a little bit more spending money than before. She still has to pay her utilities and there's the mortgage on the condo, which isn't exactly small, even with the down payment her lottery winnings were able to cover, but it's not really any more than their rent was either.
So Kate's been saving. Usually she blows it on something awesome for herself, some insanely gorgeous jacket or a pair of boots or high heels that are patterned in bright pink and purple, but right now she's saving and she feels kind of great about the ability to take her friends out now if she wants to. She's not rich, not by any means, but she has a little bit more spending money now and she plans on using it on things that make her feel good.
Somewhere along the way, things that make her feel good is making her friends feel good and so she'd called Marius up and asked him to go to a fancy dinner with her.
I mean fucking fancy, she had told him. You gotta dress up and shit.
It's like the sparkliest friend-date she can manage and she's pretty damn excited, dressed in a short, sparkling gold dress that had caused Newt's eyes to more or less bug out of his head, which is how she knows it's good. She's waiting for Marius now, stroking Jeff's head to say goodbye and telling Newt she'll bring him home some fancy leftovers.

HOUSE WARMING
Apr. 11th, 2016 06:21 pmThis is pretty much the most excited Kate has ever been about anything. Okay, maybe she was a bit more excited about her wedding day, but this definitely comes in at a close second and she thinks that's pretty fair. She and Newt are having a house warming party and are officially all moved into their new and pretty freaking swanky condo near the park.
They've had possession for awhile now, but it had been easier to get everything done while still sleeping at the apartment instead of trying to live around boxes and movers and the people she had hired to paint the whole place, because she wasn't doing it herself when there was lottery money to be spent. She feels like they've been pretty responsible with the money, too, it's not like they blew it all, but they made a sizeable down payment, which means their mortgage payments are way lower than they would have been otherwise, and the furniture is nice, but it's not like she went totally crazy.
There's leftover money. A lot actually and Kate had done the responsible thing and put it into investments so that it can grow or what the fuck ever. She's being smart, which is about a thousand steps up from where she would have been even a few years ago. Home ownership makes a person responsible. Or maybe she's just growing up.
Either way, the place is amazing and they're totally settled, and tonight, after they celebrate with all their friends, they get to spend their first night here together. She's going to miss the apartment, she can't pretend she won't, but it's nice to have her own place. A place that has both their names on all the legal stuff, something they own together.
Besides, there's a kickass patio. Who wouldn't love that?
Newt had even managed to reach a compromise on the Jacuzzi situation, not that it'd taken much convincing because he and Kate had pretty much had just about the same ideas of what they wanted their swank as hell condo to be like. While there's no actual hot tub on out the patio like there probably should be, they have installed one of those Whirlpool bathtubs like the ones that come in those super luxurious hotel suites. They haven't tested its full potential quite yet, but Newt fully anticipates that on any night they have a good chunk of free time, they'll find many different ways to put the thing to good use.
Right now, though, he's just taking it all in, looking around at all their friends who've gathered to celebrate that they'd finally moved into their dream condo, and it's kind of weird to think that this is theirs now. It's so different from their Dimera apartment, it'll still get some getting used to just because Newt had lived there since the day his ass had been dropped in this city, but he knows that being home really just means being where Kate is. As long as she's with him, it doesn't matter to Newt where they live.
Except he does have to admit, it's pretty freakin' badass that they live here.
In any case, they've got music going, finger foods put out, booze galore, and best of all, it's not cramped even with everyone who's showed up. In fact, Newt's pretty sure they could probably house a baby kaiju in here, if only one would just show up. Subdued, preferably. Jeff and Cat seem to dig the new abode, anyway, and the dog is darting around from guest to guest, providing more entertainment than people had probably expected, and Newt can't help but stand there and grin. He and Kate are happy, genuinely happy, and everyone who is responsible for contributing to that feeling is standing right here in their new home.

Mar. 21st, 2016 04:06 pmSomething is not okay.
That's pretty much all Kate has managed to gather from Derek's text, which is pretty much as frantic as a text can get, telling her that she and Newt need to be careful. She could text him back, but instead she grabs her bag and, in a direct contradiction to Derek's plea to be careful, she heads out to find Derek. Maybe she doesn't have his super sense of smell to track him down, but she knows where he goes, the places he hangs out.
Not that he'll be hanging out right now, she's pretty sure something is seriously wrong, but she still goes to Semele's and then the apartment. The last time she was here she was banging on his door playfully, demanding to be let in so she could hear all about his date. Now she's banging on his door, a little frantic with worry herself.
Something is seriously not okay and she'll end whoever has made Derek feel this way.
"Yo!" she calls, knocking a little harder. "If you're not here, you need to like, I don't know, lend me some of that super smeller you've got going on so I can find you better." She'd texted him back, but he's probably busy or hasn't checked his phone and she's more and more worried with each passing moment.
