It's still sort of hard to believe.

There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.

She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.

So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.

So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

Alex has been busy with a secret project the past couple of weeks, and she's just leaving an appointment when she gets Kate's text. She has the good luck of the diner being on her way home, but even if it hadn't been, she isn't going to ignore a text like that. A last minute invitation to dinner usually means something more, and when she finds Kate in the diner, Alex is quick to see what that more might be.

She crosses the diner quickly, her heels clicking quietly against the floor, and slides onto the booth bench opposite Kate. "Okay, spill," she invites, waving her hand in a gimme gesture. "Tell me everything. Let me see. You know, all that good kind of thing."

People just seem to know, but Kate totally doesn't mind, because everyone always seems so excited for her, too. She grins, holding her hand out toward Alex, the blue diamond glinting in the light and she still doesn't know how he picked exactly the right ring for her, but he did. He got it perfect without Kate even being aware there was a perfect.

"Did you know?" she asks. "Because I'm pretty sure like, half of Darrow has known for ages." And yet she doesn't mind at all. It just means he was excited or nervous or both and she totally understands that.

"It's beautiful," Alex says first as she admires the ring. It's maybe not a surprise her thoughts go back to Michael and Nikita, and she hopes, whatever else happened after she left, they have managed to stay together.

"And no, I didn't. I had no idea. Maybe this will finally convince Newt I'm not the spy he thinks I am." She hasn't been checking in with Newt as much as she should have recently, so many it's not a shock she didn't know. Of course, it's also not a shock that half of Darrow might know. Newt's not exactly the most secretive when he's excited. And Newt was always excited about something.

"I'm so happy for you. Did you know? I mean, was this all planned out and carefully discussed and everything, or was it some big surprise?" She's betting on surprise, but she also doubts it beats taking down a Hong Kong police detective in order to get the ring back, while handcuffed and escaping from custody. It's just a feeling Alex has.

"I had no idea," Kate says honestly and it's not like she's completely surprised, but she really hadn't known. The truth is, she and Newt have talked about it here and there, about how there's no one else they'd rather be with, that they're happy, that, as long as Darrow allows it, they want to be together. She looks ahead to her future and she sees him there and it's not scary, it's not overwhelming, it just is. But marriage had never come up.

"The only thing we really talked about was that we definitely don't want kids," she admits. "And only because I sort of thought I might be pregnant for a little bit. I mean, I wasn't, which was good, but it's kinda hard not to have that conversation when something like that happens. But getting married? No, we never talked about it."

"Okay, he gets double brownie points then for managing to keep it a secret. Especially if a bunch of other people knew." Alex is happy for Kate and Newt. They're adorable together and obviously in love.

And she's a little envious too. Because she knows that kind of future isn't possible for her. She'd almost started to hope a little, for a while, with Sean, but... but that's not the life she gets to have. She's too broken for that.

"You're great together, and this is awesome. Plus, now you get to do all that wedding planning stuff."

"Wait, is that supposed to be fun?" she asks and although she's still smiling, there's a part of her that's serious. She hasn't given it that much thought yet, but that's mostly due to the fact that she doesn't want some typical gigantic celebration at some fancy church. There's the whole non-church going thing, for one, and she's just never imagined that for herself.

Of course, she's never imagined getting married at all, so that's probably at least part of it.

"All I know is that foofy white dress? So not the direction I'm going," she says. She wants a dress, sure, but she wants something that suits her and Kate is definitely not the white wedding dress type.

"Looking like a meringue is sooooo not you," Alex agrees. "But there's bound to be a dress somewhere that you'd rock and make Newt swallow his tongue. You know, if that's something you're interested in doing." Nikita hadn't gotten to the shopping for wedding dresses stage in her engagement, mostly because there was always so much going on.

Which isn't all that different from Darrow, except in specifics. Hm.

"Oh, I'll definitely find something," she agrees brightly. "And Newt looks super good in a suit. It'll be great. I just kinda wish my mom was here and she could do all the planning for me."

That's not the only reason she wants her mom here for her wedding, but Tara would definitely be a big help. Alice would be an even bigger help, now that she's thinking about it.

"See? Good points, although I get what you mean about having your mom around." Not really, but that's what imaginations and empathy are for, right? Alex spent so long thinking her mother was dead, and after having to keep their lives separate to keep her safe, not being able to have her mother here if she were in Kate's shoes isn't even something she considers. Not that Alex will ever be in Kate's shoes like this.

"I worked for a wedding planner once," Alex says. "Just a temp gig, and I was pretty much only there for one job, so mostly all I know is how much I don't know except there are as many options as there are brides." Alex's graduation. She was supposed to assassinate the bride's father. And the less she thinks about the fall out of that mission, the better, and her smile stays steady.

"And I have blanket permission to be totally bugfuck nuts, right?" Kate asks, grinning. "I mean, that's the thing all brides are allowed to be, aren't they?" She totally won't be, she's way too laid back to actually get all worked up about anything, but there is about ten zillion shows on TV about crazy brides or scary brides or rich brides or whatever and everyone always seems to excuse the bad behaviour because she's the bride.

"I never thought I would get married," she says honestly. "So I've never thought about the wedding part before. My friend Mindy pretty much thinks that's blasphemy."

"I don't know about that," Alex says, mouth quirking into a sort of grin. Kate isn't the sort to be too insane about a wedding, even her own. It's one of the things Alex likes about her.

"I do have a lovely straitjacket you could try, if you get too Bridezilla-y. And it's neither white nor foofy."

Kate gives a snort of surprised laughter at that before she says, "If anyone is gonna need that, it'll be Newt." She'd never describe herself as calm, really, but she's pretty easygoing in the ways that matter. A wedding isn't something she's going to get totally worked up over, but Newt might.

Mostly Newt might get worked up over the food. And he'll probably want a kaiju themed cake.

"True." Of course, if he ever managed to get out of it, Newt would probably want to give it some kind of crazy upgrades or something. Which would either be brilliant or a terrible idea.

"Let me know if he gets out of hand. I'll loan it to you for a day or two."

"He would never be able to get his heart rate down low enough to get it off," Kate says with a snort of laughter. "He'd be stuck in it forever." Which is funny in theory, but she kind of likes being able to put her arms around her boyfriend -- fiancé, she has to remind herself -- now and then. "He's way too excitable for something like that."

She's pretty sure she wouldn't be able to get her heart rate down low enough either, but that's not even because she's particularly high strung and more that she's not exactly in top physical condition.

"Which would be kind of a bummer on your wedding night," Alex teases back. She wouldn't really put Newt in the straitjacket, not without some modifications to the thing first. They really would have to rely on drugs to get him out of it.

"But you could always threaten him with it. Can he even talk without having his arms free to move?"

Kate's lips quirk into a smile that she tries not to make too suggestive before she says, "Do you think he ever stops talking?" She loves him so much and she loves his enthusiasm and she loves that even in the middle of a moment that might render most men totally speechless, he can still find something to say. Not only because it's usually something super flattering about her, but that tends to help.

"He's pretty expressive, though, huh?" she asks, her smile softening.
