It's still sort of hard to believe.

There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.

She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.

So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.

So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

"What's right for your mom isn't necessarily right for you," Saffron says. "I'm sure she had your best interests at heart, and wanted you to be happy, but only you can ultimately decide what that looks like. If you're ready to get married, you're ready. And from what I can tell, the two of you are pretty rutting meant for each other."

Kate grins at that, squirming happily in the booth, because having someone say that to her feels pretty damn good. And she thinks both her parents really would like Newt, that they'd see how happy he makes her, that they'd understand all the reasons they work so well together, but she's sure they'd still try to convince her to wait just a little while longer.

That's the thing about Darrow, though. She knows if she waits too long, she could come to regret it.

"So I'm thinking pretty non-traditional for the whole thing," she admits. "No white dress, no walking down the aisle and being given away bullshit. I'm not going to change my last name."

Saffron smiles, more than happy to talk planning with Kate. "I wouldn't have pegged you as a traditional type of gal anyway," she says. "Just because something's quote-unquote 'traditional' doesn't mean it works for everyone, right? It's your wedding, after all. And listen, just say the word and I will help you out however I can with the planning, okay?"

"Really?" Kate asks, her smile growing. She hasn't given it much thought, but without her family here, she'd sort of expected to have to do most of it on her own. Of course, she also doesn't want to plan anything extravagant and over the top, but it's still nice to know she has help. "That'd be awesome, thank you. I love a good party, but I'm like, seriously shit at planning them."

For all the many, many times she's been married, Saffron's very rarely had to do much actual wedding planning. The reason the Triumph wedding ceremony was one of her favorites was because it was so easy - get the guy drunk, dance with him, give him a hat made out of a tree and more wine. Simple. But she is a business owner, and she does know how to plan an event, so she's pretty confident she can be helpful to Kate.

"Of course, honey," she assures her. "We can go as big or as small with this as you want."

"I..." She hesitates, considering, then says, "I don't actually know what I'd want." She and Newt both love a party, they both love food, they both love people, but at the same time, she doesn't think she wants some sprawling thing with like, three hundred guests, most of them people she barely even recognizes.

"I guess that's one of those things Newt and I need to figure out before we actually get anywhere with this whole thing."

"Probably, yes," Saffron replies with a smile. "I have a feeling you two will be on the same general wavelength with what kind of wedding you'd like to have, but it's a good thing to discuss beforehand."
