It's still sort of hard to believe.

There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.

She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.

So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.

So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

"Well, you're talking to the right person if you want an objective opinion. I mean, I've seen wedding pictures around Darrow, but the wedding ceremonies we had at home were nothing like that, so I don't have any attachment to the idea of a white dress. Actually, wedding ceremonies in the Southern Water Tribe were just... pretty casual. Traditionally, the husband-to-be helps out around his wife's household for a while, and sometimes you might have a big feast to celebrate," muses Korra, tapping her lips in thought. "But other than that, there wasn't really that much. We never had to make a big deal of it, you know?"

Leaning back in her seat, Korra rests a hand casually on her belly. "I definitely think that you should have whatever kind of ceremony you'd enjoy most. Or, if you don't even want a ceremony, that's fine. But selfishly, I want to see you have a ceremony. I feel like that moment when you guys are just bam, married, will feel really awesome."

"When you put it like that, it just sounds like we're overcompensating," laughs Korra, who thinks about the couple of people in her life who are arguably fun... but don't really know what it means to have fun. Mako, for example. Much as Korra will always love him in her way, he's just awkward enough around people he doesn't know that he often inadvertently ruins a moment.

"Maybe we can all have a big party beforehand and get to know one another," says Korra, tapping her chin in thought. "I'd like to meet all of your other friends, and if people get along really well, I think that'll make your big day that much more fun, right?"

Korra grins, lifting her chin. "Plus, it'd be another chance to celebrate you, and who doesn't want that?"

"But a bachelorette party is for the bachelorette, right?" Korra points out, wrinkling her nose. "So it should be whatever you would have the most fun with. If that means inviting everyone but Newt to go a little wild, then you should do that! I know that if I ever have that kind of party, I'd definitely want guys there. I still have a lot more guy friends than I have girl friends; I can't imagine not wanting to have them around."

Struck with a sudden thought, Korra grins, the expression mischievous as she sits up straighter. "Besides, if there are guys around, that means we can make them do totally embarrassing things to entertain the rest of us. Knowing Naruto, he'd probably enjoy making a spectacle. But like, you know, you're the boss. I'd definitely abuse that kind of power."

"Uch," Korra says, wrinkling her nose at Kate's tale. It definitely sounds like a series of events that would turn someone off of the idea of trying for a wedding of their own, which Korra finds unfortunate. But if Newt's managed to get Kate past that, then Korra's all the more grateful that a close friend of hers has such a good partner in life.

"The only weddings I've been at have been some in the village. No one I was really close to, since I spent most of my time training and stuff like that. But, I think the idea is definitely that you need to find that person who's different before getting hitched," Korra points out, agreeing with a laugh. "I mean, if you think about it, everyone who gets married dates a bunch of duds before just one person ends up being right. All that matters is that your marriage becomes what you want it to be."
