It's still sort of hard to believe.
There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.
She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.
So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.
So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

Leaning back in her seat, Korra rests a hand casually on her belly. "I definitely think that you should have whatever kind of ceremony you'd enjoy most. Or, if you don't even want a ceremony, that's fine. But selfishly, I want to see you have a ceremony. I feel like that moment when you guys are just bam, married, will feel really awesome."

Not that it was really her fault. Nick had been kind of a dick in the end. Kate thinks it's a pretty shitty dude who waits until the moment of the ceremony to decide it's not the thing for him.
"It'll be fun," she decides. "I mean, we're all fun, so what else can it be, right?"

"Maybe we can all have a big party beforehand and get to know one another," says Korra, tapping her chin in thought. "I'd like to meet all of your other friends, and if people get along really well, I think that'll make your big day that much more fun, right?"
Korra grins, lifting her chin. "Plus, it'd be another chance to celebrate you, and who doesn't want that?"

"I think it'd be more fun if everyone was there and not just women," she says. "But Mindy also might kick my ass if I try that." She absolutely loves Mindy and actually has no issue at all letting her take over like that, but she knows, too, that Mindy has pretty strong opinions on certain things and that unless the dudes are dancing to music and taking off their clothes, they probably won't be allowed to join in.

Struck with a sudden thought, Korra grins, the expression mischievous as she sits up straighter. "Besides, if there are guys around, that means we can make them do totally embarrassing things to entertain the rest of us. Knowing Naruto, he'd probably enjoy making a spectacle. But like, you know, you're the boss. I'd definitely abuse that kind of power."

She shrugs. "I honestly never thought I'd do it. It just seemed like a lot of work for something that was probably just going to fall apart. But Newt's different." She rolls her eyes at herself. "Everyone who gets married probably says the exact same thing."

"The only weddings I've been at have been some in the village. No one I was really close to, since I spent most of my time training and stuff like that. But, I think the idea is definitely that you need to find that person who's different before getting hitched," Korra points out, agreeing with a laugh. "I mean, if you think about it, everyone who gets married dates a bunch of duds before just one person ends up being right. All that matters is that your marriage becomes what you want it to be."
