It's still sort of hard to believe.

There are only a few people Kate has gone out of her way to tell about the fact that she and Newt are actually, seriously, for real engaged and it's not because she doesn't want to tell people, but just that she sort of wants to hold onto it on her own for a little while. She wants it just to be hers. She'd never really imagined herself getting married, but then, she'd never really imagined there was someone like Newt out there for her, so she knows plans change.

She knows things about her life, her family, she knows about the things she's done since coming to the island. The same sort of thing has happened to other people, too, and she's always been a little nervous, but it had turned out to be a good thing. She feels better for it. It's proof that her family, while irrevocably fucked up, is also still hers, no matter what happens to them. And even if she's not there with them, they love her, and she's okay. She's not as terrible at being an adult as she thinks.

So she's going to marry him even though her family isn't here to be with her, because she has other family now. People she loves, people she needs, people who are just as important and people she needs to tell about this whole thing.

So she sends a text asking them to meet her that evening at the really awesome diner not far from her apartment building. And she's nervous when she gets there, but she smiles in greeting and waves, and the ring flashes on her hand in a way she's still not used to.

Marius smiles reading the text from Kate, wondering briefly if Newt has finally asked her the important question. He makes his way to the diner, keen to enjoy Kate's company either way. He enters the diner nonchalantly, making his way over to the table where various other people sit. He spots Kate instantly, and as he heads in her direction, he catches a glimpse of a flash on her hand. His grin widens.

"I take it you have good news to share?" He asks.

"Oh, my god, did you know already?" she asks, leaning her elbows on the table to look at Marius. She's glad he's come, she'd wanted to share the news with him, but it seems like he already knows and she's really going to have to talk to Newt about the fact that he totally hasn't left anyone for her to tell.

"Did Newt tell you?" she ask, grinning. "Wait, did he tell you before or after he asked?" She has to wonder how many people knew before she did. Not that she minds. She's way too pleased about life in general lately to actually be annoyed that she was totally the last to know.

"Well, I was on my way home some nights ago now when I ran into Newt and he asked for ideas on how to propose," he admits with a sheepish grin. He remembers how nervous the other man seemed then; he is so glad to find that both Kate and Newt now are quite happy.

"So he did inform me before he proposed," he says. "But he never told me the idea he ultimately settled on to propose, so that part is still a mystery to me."

"Oh, my god, he totally would," she says with a huff of laughter, trying to imagine Newt and Marius coming up with a way to do it. "It was... it was totally sweet. Up on the roof of the apartment building, which just seemed totally right. That's where he told me he loved me, that's where we had his birthday party. It was really nice." And she still can't quite believe she's actually engaged.

"My parents would be flipping out right now, wow," she says with another laugh.

"That sounds lovely," Marius says, surprised by how romantic it sounds, considering what Newt has told him about his relationship with Kate, how they like to do things without as much focus on tradition. But then, considering what Kate tells him about the roof, it seems like the perfect spot for them to become engaged. "I'm so happy for you both. Do you know when the wedding's going to be?"

"Really?" He asks, curious. "Would they not be happy for you? Or would they feel insulted because Newt did not ask them for your hand first?"

"I don't know, we haven't really talked about that part. I'm still mostly trying to get used to actually being engaged," she admits with a small smile, glancing down at the ring. It's the perfect ring. Of course, she thinks maybe she'd think that no matter what it looked like, because it's from Newt. Because he put in the effort and he found something he knew she would like and that makes it perfect.

"No, I think... I don't think my parents ever expected me to get my shit figured out," she admits. "I mean, they loved me, and I think they'd really like Newt, but I was always kind of the fucked up sibling. I'm sure they were both surprised I wasn't knocked up by the time I was sixteen."

"I imagine just becoming engaged must bring its own sense of wonder," he muses thoughtfully, eyes flicking to where she glances, smiling as he catches the shine of her ring. It perfectly suits her, he thinks; Newt found the perfect one. "Beyond marriage itself."

"Well, I think you're quite capable," he tells her, surprised that her parents apparently do not feel the same way. "And I think you and Newt are both going to, how do you say, 'kick ass' at engagement and marriage."

She hasn't actually given much thought to how this will change her life or her relationship with Newt, but the more she thinks of how her parents might react, the more she realizes it's kind of a big deal. They're taking a huge step and she's not scared, but she is a little nervous. Only sometimes.

When Marius speaks, though, she's totally distracted from her thoughts and she laughs. "Oh, my god, you used modern slang. I'm so proud of you."

He can never really picture Kate as the type of person who gets nervous, not after she saved him from those thugs just the other month. To him, Kate always appears at ease in her surroundings in a way that reminds him of Courfeyrac, which is part of the reason he finds himself so comfortable around her.

"Did I use the right slang?" He asks with a sheepish grin, still unsure as to many of these modern day words.

"You totally did," she says, wanting to be encouraging. She doesn't think Marius needs to change himself in any way, really, she thinks he's totally adorable just the way he is and that the people in Darrow who are worth his time will think definitely agree. But she likes that he's trying. He might not understand everything, but he really does try and she thinks that's such a cool trait for a person to have.

"You're way more at ease here than you were when I first met you," she says. "I can see the difference. I mean, you still can't skate for shit."

"Well, good," he says, brushing a hand through his hair with another grin. He still has much to learn about modern idioms, and he suspects that he will misuse one or several of them in the process. He's just happy to be able to express himself in terms Kate is more familiar with. As someone who once made his living based on languages, Marius is determined to study any and all aspects of any one he happens to come across.

"No, I suppose I really can't," he laughs. He agrees; he feels different than when he first arrived, though it has only been five months, now.

"That's okay, we'll keep practicing," she says with a grin. "Or you can practice on your dates. Tell me you've asked that girl on a date."

She knows it's due to the ring on her finger now, but lately all she can think about is how she wants her friends to be happy. And she knows a date is a pretty far cry from marriage and spending their lives together, but she still hopes he's actually asked for the date by now.

"I'd like that," he says with a grin. He blushes when she brings up Kathy and the date, sheepishly running a hand through his hair. "I have. We've been to the boardwalk for ice cream. It's been lovely, so far."

He feels at a distance, compared to where Kate currently stands with Newt, but Marius finds he is happy to talk about the recent changes in his own life. He can't keep his cheeks from flushing every time he thinks of Kathy.

"Good," she says, heaving a dramatic sigh, as if she'd been worried that Marius might never actually ask the poor girl. He seems so shy most of the time, but she's also pretty sure that in the time he's from, dudes are supposed to do all the asking, so she probably had nothing to really worry about.

"Are you going to ask her out again?" she asks and she's pretty sure she's supposed to be doing that thing where she gushes about her engagement, but she's told Marius the important stuff. Now she wants to hear about his love life.

Marius feels a little like the tables have been turned on him as Kate asks him more about his date with Kathy and if he's going to ask her out again. He feels odd, talking about his love life when the focus should really be on Kate and her good news.

"Yes, I really...enjoy her company," he admits with a sheepish smile. He hasn't felt as comfortable around anyone else in Darrow as he has with Kathy. She has the quiet strength Marius wishes he himself possessed. "And how about you and Newt, then? Has becoming engaged changed anything about your relationship?"

"I don't think so," she says, considering, and she wonders if being married will be like that, too, if it'll just feel like everything has felt with him right from the beginning. There are probably plenty of people who think they're rushing it, but she doesn't feel that way. She loves him and she wants to be with him and Darrow isn't a guarantee. If they wait a year or two or five, one of them might be gone, and if that's the case, she wants to have all she can in that time.

"It feels pretty much exactly like it should, I think," she says. "I mean, we were already living together and... he's been around every day for so long now that it just seems normal."

"Well, that's good then," Marius says with a smile. He isn't familiar really with how engagements and marriages work in this modern age; he's used to grand celebrations for announcements, before even the event itself. From what it appears, such things in Darrow appear more subdued, which perhaps allows for one's relationship to carry on as it always has.

"I think if you are already so familiar with him, you shouldn't have any surprises with marrying him," he says. "But truly, I am so happy for you both."

"Thank you," Kate says, feeling her smile growing at that and she's not prone to blushing at all, but if she were, she thinks this would be the point when she'd be blushing. She hasn't had a ton of other relationships, just the one with Harry, but she's dated enough to know what she doesn't want to deal with ever again.

And Newt's just the right man. He's the right fit. He's good to her and he's smart and he's kind, but he speaks his mind, too. "I'm pretty sure he's like... exactly the person I'm supposed to be with."

She looks truly happy, and that is all Marius knows anyone can ask for when searching for love. He has heard the expression enough to be almost familiar with it, and it seems apt to Kate and her happiness at the moment: she seems to glow with her wonderful news. It brightens Marius' own self in return.

"That is wonderful," he says with a soft smile. "I wish you both only the best, long and happy lives together."

"So you'll be there, right?" she asks, swinging her legs a little. "I mean, obviously you'll get like, a fancy invitation and all that shit, but you'll be there." She has no idea when they'll do it or what the whole thing will look like, but she only wants to know for sure all her friends will be there with them.

"Of course," Marius says, somewhat taken aback by the invitation, though he knows he ought not to be. Kate is a dear friend, and it means a lot that she would want him at her wedding. "I would not miss it for the world."
